SkillsUSA National Leadership Center
A Home for Leadership, History and Heritage
From vision to reality, the SkillsUSA National Leadership Center served as a physical and symbolic home for the organization for over four decades. Located in Leesburg, Va., the Center was more than a headquarters – it was a living monument to skilled trades, leadership and the power of student-led progress.

Origins and Vision
Almost from the founding of VICA in 1965, members dreamed of a permanent home for the national organization. After years of planning and fundraising through efforts like Building Blocks for the Future and Pennies for the Center, SkillsUSA purchased 41 acres in Leesburg, Va. in 1972. The site was selected for its historical roots and potential to grow into a full leadership campus.
Building a Legacy
Groundbreaking took place in 1978 during the Washington Leadership Training Institute, and in 1979, the Center was formally dedicated using the trowel of George Washington to lay the cornerstone. Constructed with union labor, the building showcased craftsmanship with oak woodwork, fieldstone fireplaces and meeting spaces designed to encourage connection and collaboration.
A Place of Pride
The downstairs of the Center featured a Hall of Honor, displaying memorabilia and plaques for donors, national officers and founding members. Outdoor areas included memorial trees, engraved pavers and a “Retirement Row” of trees for long-serving staff. It was a hub for national staff, students, board meetings and advisors for over 40 years.
Transition and Tribute
In 2023, SkillsUSA respectfully sold the property. The pandemic had shifted national operations to a fully virtual model, and increasing repair and maintenance costs for the aging and under-utilized office and meeting space made maintaining the building both expensive and impractical. Though no longer a physical home, the Center remains a proud chapter in SkillsUSA’s history – one built by members, for members.
